Are you looking for happiness?
I have found the secret, and it might not be what you think it is.
Are you waiting for something that will make you happy? Do you want more fulfilling work? Do you want to earn more money and have nicer clothes or a great car? Do you want success, adventure, to travel the world?
In other words, are you waiting for the 'happily ever after?'
The secret is: stop trying.
Imagine a little baby. The baby is born with the capability to have many emotions -- anger, sadness, frustration, joy, and happiness. The baby giggles at the smallest things... it does not take much to make him or her happy. A good parent will be attentive to the baby. The parent makes sure that his or her needs are fulfilled... that she is comfortable, that he is well-fed, that she has fresh air and sunshine on her face. And then, the baby is happy. Give the baby something interesting to see or do, and suddenly his joy cannot be contained! He giggles, or she laughs.... and the joy is infectious.
We are all born able to experience happiness. But do we wait for happiness to come to us? Or, like a good parent, do we give ourselves the simple opportunity to enjoy life? Do our thoughts focus more on what is wrong, or do we focus on what is beautiful, what is fun, what is in the world for us to enjoy?
The other part of the secret is: you can decide to be happy, to cultivate happiness, and to look for reasons to be happy every day.
American science fiction writer Margaret Bonanno says “It is only possible to live happily ever after on a daily basis."
Let that sink in for a minute.
Happiness is already born inside you. It only needs your attention to help it to grow.
