What is motivation? “Motivation is a psychological feature that arouses an organism to act towards a desired GOAL. For example, hunger is a motivation that elicits a desire to eat.
These inner conditions such as wishes, desires, goals, activate to move in a particular direction in behaviour.” By Wikipedia.
Note: I use Wikipedia because normally we find different definitions everywhere so this is one useful to write this article.
Many friends refer to me as a motivated person! And yes! This is my topic! But then I always tell them, you are very motivated too! When they say that to me they think of me going to the gym, eating healthy, looking for new things to do, meeting new people, etc. When I tell them I think of them going to party, going to the park, to the cinema, getting drunk, etc.
Is this not motivation?
Should we then add the willpower term?
Can we relate laziness to luck of motivation? Are we all lazy oafs?
Willpower is self-discipline, self-control. Either to do something or to stop doing something.
I tell my friends, I am motivated, but not sure if that it’s just that I have willpower… It seems a good topic to reflect about. Because sometimes we do things without any effort and other times it requires so much effort! Why is that?
Are you trying to get motivated to do the right things? Do you really wanna be motivated to do this? Or that? What do you want to get motivated with? We may not think about this many times, but is probably an interesting thing to think about. Why are we forcing ourselves in doing things we don’t care about? Is it worth it?
Maybe we can use our willpower to spend some time thinking about this. And perhaps stop doing what is not really motivating us. And making us become super lazy! So yeah we are all lazy at some point but we all know we are not lazy for so many things, so let’s focus on these ones, find them out!
How to get that amazing motivation some people have?
As we said, GOALS! Do you have goals set up? Are these goals set up the ones which motivate you? How much do you desire your goals?
What about… Observing yourself, observe your feelings each moment, observe where you get that motivation from. Getting to know yourself can massively increase your motivation as you will set up goals that only make you feel good! And you may not need to use your willpower or even if you do, you may find it worth it!
Also being conscious of what is your level of motivation and what is your level of willpower can help.
- If you have a lot of willpower, might be interesting to check what has motivated you as you may realise after few years that you are doing things that doesn’t motivate you really!
- And if you are not reaching any of your goals but you are very motivated, you better check how to increase your willpower, so that you can manage to use it in the right direction!
Now The question is, do we really want to increase our willpower? Or we want to understand ourselves, find out what we like and what makes us feel good and then use the willpower to reach that? Is there any point on reading stuff we are not interested in?
Do we really want to live fully and pleasant every moment of our life? meaning NOT doing even one thing we don’t like? Or is it worth it to sacrify ourselves and use our willpower to do things we don’t enjoy but will let us meet our goals and make us feel good afterwards?
Or should we try to find better ways to be able to reach these goals doing things we like? Is this possible?
I used to have a very high willpower, where I could motivate myself to do anything, even if I didn’t like it! Usually it has been worth it, but I keep questioning this to myself before using my willpower as I believe there are many different ways to reach the same things.
Using your creativity can increase the chances of not suffering to reach your goals!
Concluding Find the way which works for YOU! Motivate yourself in the right direction for YOU. And use your willpower for something worth it!
